Title: To God Be The Glory
Author: Dr. Mike Privett
Pub: BJU Press
Well this is the beginning of an interesting set of reviews! Over my vacation I decided to read two books on the same subject to kind of compare what two different camps or shall I call it points of view. So I'll start part 1 of this with coming from the camp that I grew up with and seem pretty familiar with, I don't even know how to describe it but I would call it the traditional conservative fundamentalist for better use of terms.
I first glanced through this book when I was in college, I was taking a class called Biblical Leadership and we had to write a paper that our teacher called Glorifying God in the Church. It was basically summarizing what this class was all about and we had to take what we had learned in class and search out for further principles in God's word on how we bring glory to God in the local church. The professor recommended checking out this dissertation from the library and getting some ideas. Now in college I was not the type of person to go and get a book that every teacher recommended, but I really enjoyed this teacher and really trusted his opinion, so I went to the library and checked it out. I was really encouraged by it and found myself writing down some of the statements and really thinking about them. Well I kept thinking this is something that really needs to be in book format, and sure enough about 6 months after taking this class sure enough BJU Press put this out.
So what's it about? What brings glory to God in the church? Privett feels that there are 6 important elements: Evangelism, instruction, Fellowship, Worship, Prayer, and Equipping Believers. According to Privett these 6 elements should each function together and balanced to maintain a God glorifying ministry. He feels that the aim of the church should be fore the center of the target, where all of these come together. But what are these elements and how are they displayed. I don't want to go through these, you can do that yourself, but let me try and summarize these quickly.
The first element is Evangelism, and put simply it is the witnessing of the gospel to those that need it. This is something that can be done through many ways such as personal evangelism, indirect evangelism, church planting, and missions. This something that doesn't have to be a set time of the week, but that the body should be doing at all times.
The second is Instruction, and put simply it is exposing the meaning of God's word. Bible preaching that relays on careful study of God's word and making the truths of it simple for us today. There are also other ways of getting this out, but preaching should be one of the primary ways.
The third is Fellowship, and put simply it is the gathering of believers together. This can be accomplished through getting together and meeting the needs of others. This can be something that is formal and informal, or facilitative.
The fourth is Worship, and put simply it is to come together and showing or acknowledging worth, value, or esteem to someone that is worthy, namely that being the one and true God of the Bible. This can be through services, music, and giving other the Lord's ordinances of the Supper and Baptism.
The fifth is Prayer, and put simply it is the obedient act of a believer bringing his confession, praise, and requests to our Heavenly Father in dependence on Him. This can be done personally and corporately as a body of believers.
And finally Equipping Believers, and put simply it is helping a believer in his growth and making him ready for all points of life. This instructing and perfecting that we all need in our life. This can be done through Bible studies, Bible Training opportunities, one-on-one discipleship, and other forms.
Six simple and easy elements, but the saddest thing is when these are all out of balanced, and then everything is thrown off. If a church puts more emphasis on instruction then evangelism is hurt. And the analogy could go on and on. But Privett has a point, that all of these need to be on target.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s simple and to the point, and its written by someone who knows what he is talking about. Too many of the church marketing books are all about a plan and results based on that church and this one is based on God's Word for its source material.
